60 Seconds is interested in all types of media, our only prerequisite is that you create new, interesting material specifically for this format, style and theme (in future issues we’ll let you know the theme ahead of time). However, as we’re laying the groundwork and figuring out the bugs, our first issue will be a grab bag of styles and substance. We’re interested in narrative that takes place in a 60 second intervals — what this means exactly is up to you — whether it’s a comic that has sixty panels, a piece of fiction that covers a 60 second time period, an essay on what a minute even means, a game that’s 60 seconds long — you decide what format and style works best for you. If you want slightly more detailed information, head over here. We do have a few requirements though — mostly in formatting and means to send things to us.

Legal

Don’t worry, we’ll keep this simple. We’ll retain first digital rights of your work for four months (the duration of the issue), after that it’s all yours again. What does that mean? Well, it means we politely ask that you don’t submit your work elsewhere, publish it on your blog, post it on your Facebook or whatever else. This isn’t because we’re money-grubbing jerks, it’s because your work exists in conjunction with everyone else’s and we want it to stay that way for each issues run.

Payment

For the first issue, we can’t offer any payment for your lovely submissions because we’re launching it as a free download. That said, future issues will offer a retroactive payment to all contributors based solely on sales. We plan on selling each issue for 99 cents, after each issues run, we’ll tally up the sales and distribute the money evenly across contributors via Paypal. This means you might get paid $1 or you might get paid $1000, we have no idea. Back issues will be free after the launch of the new one — so you won’t be getting royalty checks either. Why are we doing it this way? Well, our objectives are two-fold: we want to pay everyone equally for their work (including ourselves), and we want you to do a bit of advertising for us, after all, the better an issue sells, the more money you get. It’s win-win, right?

Text

We like words as much as we like everything else — but we do want you keep in mind these works are quick, digestible bits of information. That said — you have complete freedom in how you’d like to get your narrative across. If you just finished a book and you want to showcase a chapter, that’s great, but this probably isn’t the place for it. We want bits of short-short fiction, flash fiction, short essays, weird scribblings — anything you have that can be read in about 60 seconds, takes place within 60 seconds of time or uses some neat, interactive elements. What does this mean in regards to formatting? Well, it means we need your text in .doc or .rtf format — if you’re using wacky formatting you’d like to retain, mention it in the email and we’ll hit you up for a .pdf as well. If you’re doing any type of hypertext or wiki format, please include all .html and .js files in a .zip or .rar for us.

Traditional Art

We love regular old-fashioned art as much as interactive art — so you have a complete freedom here as to what you’d like to do. Our only requirement is that if you’re using interactive elements, it’s all programmed in HTML5 or CSS3 so that we don’t have to do any whacky conversions on our own time.

Comics

Everyone loves comics and we’re no different. Do whatever you want here, just make sure when you send them to us they’re in a format we understand — .pdf, .jpg, .gif, etc. If you’re confused on what to do, just combine the above descriptions of text and traditional art into one paragraph and go off that.

Games

Games are the one thing we are really excited to showcase and give an avenue for publication for — but that said, we do have a few limitations we’d like you to work inside of. We need all games to be programmed in HTML5 and CSS3 — and we need them to retain the themes of the issue. Other than that, you’re welcome to interpret our requirements however you see fit.

Audio

60 second songs, 60 second interviews, old-time radio, cut-ups — whatever you see fit works for us too — we only ask when you’re done with your 60 second magnum opus you send it to us in a .mp3 file.

Video

We decided to use the term “video” so that it leaves it completely open to interpretation on your part. Do you have a 60 second stop-motion Lego battle? A documentary about oil spills? An experimental montage to Lewis and Clark? A comedy clip? Great! Just please get it to us in a .mov file.

Everything else

We’re well aware that we haven’t thought of everything, so if you work in some medium we didn’t know existed or forgot about, send it our way — but do so in a format we’ll comprehend and know what to do with.

I’m into this, now what?

Send it to us! Just make sure to include the following information:

In the subject line, type: 60 Seconds submission

Include your name, address, phone number and email in case we have questions

Attach your media, if your media is too big for an attachment or you’re worried it’ll get lost or eaten by spam-bots, we understand, but include a link so we can download it from somewhere

We’ll respond to all submissions as quickly as we can. We’ll also work with you as editors if we feel your piece is a good fit but needs a little work — and on the flip side we’ll let you know why it isn’t if we decide not to accept it.
